NEM 2017 announces first Q&A with Vanja Černjul, award winning cinematographer
Leading TV experts, managers and board members of TV companies, as well as broadcasters from the entire region, with gather in Dubrovnik from 12 to 15 June 2017

Vanja Černjul, a Croat who lives and works in New York, is an award-winning cinematographer who has worked on 20 feature films, numerous hit TV series and countless other projects with a wide range of collaborators.His work has brought him honors such as the Best TV Series Cinematography Award from the American Society of Cinematographers for the series Marco Polo, Best Cinematographer at the Film Festival in Stockholm for Rain, Zlatna Arena at the Pula Film Festival for Ćaća, as well as the Kodak Vision award for the movie The Photographer at the Avignon/New York Film Festival. Černjul has earned two Emmy nominations for the best TV series cinematography for his work on NBC’s sitcoms 30 Rock and Nurse Jackie of the distribution company Showtime / Lions Gate.
Thorny road to stardom
What makes Černjul so interesting is his difficult path to success. He graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb in 1991. After that he joined the war cameramen during the Homeland War in Croatia, filming for the BBC, CNN and NBC. After the decline of production in the domestic film industry in 1995 and with a great desire to become a cinematographer, Černjul moved to New York and enrolled in a master’s degree at the Tisch Graduate School of the Arts at NYU.
Great recognition for his work came in 2013 when Černjul became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers. He is also an active member of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), Imago (European Federation of Cinematographers), HFS (Croatian Society of Cinematographers), The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the European Film Academy.
His recent work includes the HBO series The Deuce and Netflix hits Orange is the New Black and Marco Polo.
